The only information re his birth comes from the census records - about 1819 in Bristol, Gloucestershire. However from the entry in the Register of Deaths he was born about 1813. The 1861 entry lists his uncle Thomas Dutton born about 1790 in Deptford. His parents were William Dutton and Elizabeth who had several children, but the only one old enough to be a parent of William James is John Dutton born in 1794. A John Dutton married a Hannah in Bristol in about 1816, and there is an entry for John Dutton and daughter and granddaughter both named Hannah living in Southwark in 1851. This entry states John as being married, but does not give his wife. There is also a son James H born in Southwark in about 1822. The IGI has an entry for a James Harvey Dutton born 11 May 1821 and christened on 15 June 1823 at St George The Martyr, Southwark, parents John Dutton and Ann. A William Harvey Dutton with the same parents was born on 19 May 1823, but has the same same christening details - he died on 14 December 1823. The middle name Harvey also occurs in other family members. However there is another William Dutton christened in Deptford in 1828 parents John and Ann - was this William James?
I am also confused with his son William - there is an entry in the IGI for a Wm Dutton christened in 1942 in St Paul, Deptford, parents Wm Dutton and Charlotte (Charlotte was born in Deptford according to the census entries) and there is registered birth in Greenwich at the same time, but the census entries give his place of birth as Sheerness and his age gives his date of birth as about 1845.
In the 1851 census as William Dublin (sic - in the index, Dutton on the original), aged 32, born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, employed as a millwright and engineer, and living with his wife, two sons (Tom and William), and Kenneth Gooding (aged 22, born in Rochester and employed as a bargemaster) and his wife Sarah (aged 25 and born in Rochester) at The Common, St. Nicholas, Rochester, Kent.
In the 1861 census as William Dutton aged 42, born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, employed as an engineer, and living with his wife, two sons (Thom and William) and his uncle Thomas at 4 Melgund Place, St Nicholas, Rochester, Kent.
Death of William James Dutton in FreeBMD aged 67 in January-March 1870 in Medway (2a 378) which includes Rochester. If the age is correct it puts the birth in 1813.
William James Dutton was the father of Joseph Garibaldi Dutton, the husband of my half great aunt Mary Ann Payne.
