Her mother died in 1859.

On the copy of entry of marriage number 379 for the marriage of Frances Downes and George Payne on 16 July 1861 in the parish church of St James Clerkenwell in Middlesex Mary Downes was a witness.

Her father died in 1862.

In the 1871 census as Mary Downs aged 22, born in Islington, unmarried, employed as a machinist, and lodging with Mary Martin (aged 45, married, employed and employed as a shopkeeper), her children (Ellen aged 10, Emma aged 18 and employed as a machinist, Kate aged 8, Thomas aged 12, William aged 16), her married daughter (Sophia Denton aged 22 and employed as a machinist) and grandson (John Denton aged 1) all born in Gravesend, Kent and living at 2 Dod Street, St Anne Limehouse, London.
