Elkhorn-If Marvin Leroy Darwin, 20, Wonder Lake, III., is a thief, be sure to say "gentleman thief." Because he took only a bow tie from the Whitewater State College student who befriended him, and in exchange for hospitality he left a pair of orange trousers with a note saying: "You may keep these — they're too small for me." But when Officer Eldridge Melancon arrested him Wednesday morning, Marvin was wearing two sweaters, two pairs of pants, a jacket and boots owned by other college students who room at the George West home in Whitewater. His pockets were filled with their cuff links, lighters, razors and lotions. In custody at the Walworth County jail, Marvin asked Sheriff Joe Dorr if there was some medical treatment he could have to keep him from such doings. He just completed a 90- day larceny sentence' in the Marathon County jail and before that served six months at Vandaha, III., for petty larceny. He was to appear in justice court here today. Marvin told his hard luck story to Harvey Meyer, a college student from Janesville, when he found Meyer working in a restaurant. Meyer was sympathetic and agreed to take Marvin to his rooming house. Wednesday morning Meyer had to leave early but left word that Marvin should be given breakfast. Marvin didn't get up until about 9. The landlady's daughter, Mrs. Eddie O'Donell, stopped in as he ate breakfast and noted some incongruities in his attire. There was a sort of overstuffed appearance too. When Marvin left the house she went upstairs and discovered the orange pants and the note. Officer Melancon caught up with Marvin in front of the Red Hen Inn as he was attempting to thumb a ride out of town.
