Dr J C Darnley, who had been a general practitioner in south London, died on 12 February aged 66. John Cyril Darnley qualified in medicine from King's College Hospital in 1951 and joined a practice in West Norwood as a trainee, later becoming a junior partner. Subsequently, he took over practices in Balham and Norbury, where he remained until retirement. He was for many years a medical officer to Rank Hovis McDougall and also the Morganite Crucible Company. He was a keen golfer and was the medical officer for a time to the Vaudeville Golfing Society. He was also a major in the South East London Cadet Force. His war service as captain of a Wellington bomber in the Middle East led to three years as a prisoner of war in Silesia. Increasing respiratory insufficiency, perhaps a legacy from his war service, had restricted his activities during recent years. A man of many talents, he had played the clarinet and saxophone in earlier days and recently had devoted much time painting in water colours, his work being of high quality. He is survived by his wife and three children. -JAB.
