Notes

Two entries in Ancestry East Sussex, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1920 for William Croucher baptised 14 May 1837 in Ditchling, parents William and Maria Croucher. "Baptisms Ditchling, Sussex [...] 14 May 1837 Croucher William William & Maria, Cuckfiel" (note that this is a typed copy taken from an original document), and "Page 72 Baptisms folemnized in the Parifh of Ditchling in the County of Sufsex in the Year 1837 [...] 1837 [...] May 14 No.570 William Son of William [a] Wheelwright & Maria Croucher [of] Cuckfield".

In the 1841 census as William Croucher aged 4, born in Sussex and living with William Croucher (father?), Thomas Croucher (brother?) and Mary Croucher (sister?) in Cuckfield, Sussex. A Maria Whitesides aged 20 was a housekeeper at the same address. I cannot locate his mother.

In the 1851 census as William Croucher aged 14, born in Cuckfield, Sussex, and living with his parents (Willm and Mary), sister (Mary), a lodger (Francis Holloway aged 25, born in Christ Church, Hampshire, single and a lawyer), a visitor (Arthur Holloway aged 18, born in Christ Church, Hampshire, single and a labourer) and two servants (James Pollard aged 21, born in West Hoathly, Sussex, and and Joseph Goacher aged 18, born in Cuckfield, both single and wheelwrights) at Crouchlands, Whiteman's Green, Cuckfield, Sussex.

A Hannah Croucher Apps was born in Burstow Sussex and registered in April-June 1858 in Reigate. This appears to have been his daughter, but there is a long break before his marriage.
