In the 1871 census as William Croucher aged 15, born in Crookham, Hampshire, an agricultural Labourer, and living with his aunt (Charlotte Sewington), brother (James) and cousin (Fanny Sewington) at Malt House No. 2, Crondall, Hampshire.

Entry in his son Alfred's Service Records states he was his father address 2 Carnival Cottages, Brighton Road A.shot on 6 December 1915.
