Entry in Ancestry Surrey, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812 for the marriage of Jonas Chitty and Ann Lee on 25 June 1738 at Cranleigh, St Nicholas. "An Account of the Marriages Wh: happened at Cranley in the year 1736 [...] Marriages att Cranley J738 [...] Jonas Chitty and Anne Lee both of this Parish, were married June the 25th 1738 ewith Banns".

All the children were christened in Cranleigh, his name being spelt Iones in the case of Anne, and the surname being spelt Chitty in all cases. The mother's name, Anne, is only given for Jonas and James. However the will (below) also mentions a daughter Sarah, and the only possible christening for her is the daughter of Jones Chitty in Shere in 1746 (which fills a gap in the other christenings). The will also mentions Henry, but I can find no christening for him, but he was most likely born about 1743.

There are three entries in Ancestry UK, Poll Books and Electoral Registers, 1538-1893 for Jonas Chitty Cranley, Dunsfold Hundred of Blackheath, occupier Henry Chitty in 1774 and 1775, and 1780

His wife died in Cranleigh in 1778.

There are three entries in Ancestry Surrey, England, Land Tax Records, 1780-1832 for Jonas Chitty in 1780 and 1781 when he paid £18 8s. 0d. as occupier, proprietor Mrs Lime in 1870 and Michl Farmers J Hurst in 1781.

I cannot find any record of a Jonas Chitty being buried at Dunsfold (only three Chittys were), but this deduction may have been made from the following will:

Jonas Chitty, the elder of Ewhurst in the County of Surrey, yeoman To my sons, Henry Chitty and Jonas Chitty and the survivor of them and his heirs my farmlands and real estate and the appurtenances situate in the parish of Dunsfold in the occupation of my said son Henry Chitty together with all my goods chattels credits ready money real and personal estate in trust for the following purposes to sell except a large oak chest which I give and bequeath to Jonas Chitty son of my son George Chitty, to pay debts and funeral expenses and pay themselves the sum of 5 pounds a piece as a kind of compensation for not placing them out as apprentices as I have done their brothers and the rest to be divided equally amongst them my said son Henry and Jonas and all my sons and daughters namely George Richard James Ann Sarah and Hannah share and share alike.

John Nichols had an entry on a website for Jonas Chitty who married Ann Lee on 25 June 1738 in Cranley, Surrey, had nine children (two entries for Hannah, the first of which has the same christening date as George), and died in 1799, and the above will.

Cranley is the old spelling of Cranleigh - it was changed by the Post Office in 1864 to prevent confusion with Crawley.

Jonas Chitty was Felicity's fifth great grandfather.
