I am strongly opposed to the legalisation of suicide or assisted suicide. When our daughter was in her late teens and early twenties, she was ill with depression and.desperately wanted to die. With the help of good mental health care and loving, supportive, close family, she came through this dark period of seven years, and we are so grateful that she is alive today, working on a PhD. Seasons of dark despair do pass. Two close friends of ours each went through a period of suicide attempts, but today they are healthy is every way - what a tremendous loss if they had been helped to die before their life came to a natural end. My mother-in-law's husband is completely incapacitated with Post-Cortical Atrophy. He can do nothing for himself, not even talk, many would question whether his life should continue, whether he would want it to. It is easy to look from the outside and make a judgement, but we are not actually in that person's shoes. His home is a place of beauty where he is lavished with the most loving care possible by his wife and her team of carers. It is good for our society to have opportunities to care for, give meaning to, and protect those members who are less able, and in pain and anguish. Life is precious from conception, caring for those with deformities.
