His next of kin was his wife Ethel Kathleen Belton, a spinster married on 12 May 1913 in Leyton, Essex, and he had two children Ruth Annie Bayly born on 30 October 1913 and Ethel May Bayly born on 9 November 1916, both in Portsmouth, and the family address was 4 St Albans Road, Southsea. He enlisted on 11 December 1915 at Portsmouth as 123753 in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, and served in France. He was a gunner and a signaller having passed as Very Good in Signalling Telephony on 20 May 1917 and Wireless Telephony at RE Wireless Depot Worcester on 17 July 1917. He was discharged on 28 February 1919.
