In the 1841 census as Elisher Bartos (sic - in the index) aged 20 rounded down to a multiple of 5, not born in Sussex, and living with George and Elizabeth (parents?), Alfred, George and Thedore (brothers?) and Ellen and Emma (sisters?) in Northside of Cheapside, Brighthelmstone St Peter, Sussex, other possible occupants are George Parkett and Harriott Willand, both aged 20 and born in Sussex.

At the baptism of his son Robert in 1851 he was a shoemaker living in Thrawl Street, his daughter in 1853 a case maker in New Street Bishopsgate, and son in1858 a box maker living at 8 St Thomas Street.
