"Page 45 Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Christ Church, Barnet in the County of Middlesex in the Year one thousand nine hundred and three [...] 1903 Dec 17 No. 353 William Claydon Willie [sic] [parents] Walter, [an] Ironmongers Assistant, & Ellen Maria [of] 11 Puller Road, Barnet (Born 9th July 1903)". I assume his third name was Wille from his mother's first marriage.

In the 1911 census as William Barnard aged 8, born in High Barnet, Hertford, female (sic - in the index, male on the original) and boarding with George Payne (aged 44, born in Ashurst, Sussex and a market gardening labourer), his wife (Caroline aged 48, born in Cows, Isle of Wight, married fo fifteen years with one child, still living), daughter (Gladys Eva aged 14 and born in Botley, Hampshire), and three other boarders (Ernest Fincham aged 6 and born in Clerkenwell, London, Cecil Fincham (female in the index, male on the original, aged 8 and born in Clerkenwell, London, and Arthur Speechly aged 7 and born in West Ham, London) in six rooms in Botley Green, Botley, Hampshire. His mother was living at 25 Stafford Road, High Barnet, married but deserted three years, a needlewoman living on her own account, and with her two children from her first marriage.
