Matilda Elizabeth Baker? - see notes
Birth of Selba Baker in FreeBMD in October-December 1844 in Farnham (4 142).
Christening of Selby Baker in the IGI on 6 October 1844 in Frensham, Surrey, parents John and Mary Baker.
In the 1851 census as Seller (sic - in the index, Selbe on the original) Baker aged 6, born in Frensham, Surrey and living with his parents (John and Mary), three brothers (Albert, Joseph and Stephen), and seven sisters (Clara, Ellen, Emley, Kate A, Maria, Matilda and Priscille), a visitor (Angelina Mary aged 19, born in Richmond, Surrey, single and no stated employment) and a servant (George Glaysher aged 22, born in Headley, Hampshire, single and an agricultural labourer) in Lower Churt, Frensham, Surrey.
In the 1861 census as Selbe (sic - on the original) Baker aged 16, born in Frensham, Surrey and living with his parents (John and Mary), four brothers (Albert, Joseph , Maurice, and Stephen), and four sisters (Clare, Kate, Metilda and Prisille) in Churt, Frensham, Surrey.
In the 1871 census as Selby Baker aged 26, born in Frensham, Surrey, single, a farm labourer, and living with his brother (Stephen), and sister (Kate Anelia Batter) in Upper Churt, Frensham, Surrey. I suspect this was Outmoor.
In the 1881 census as Selby Baker, aged 36, born in Frensham, Surrey, single, a pork butcher, and living with his brother (Joseph), sister-in-law (Elizabeth), and five nephews (Alle, Frank, George, James and Joseph) at Crosswater, Frensham, Surrey.
Marriage of Selby Baker and Matilda Elizabeth Lancelott in FreeBMD in April-June 1889 in Barnet (3a 324).
I cannot find an entry for his wife's death, but he is a widower in 1891. A Matilda Elizabeth Baker was born in July-September 1889 in Lambeth - I can find no later information on her either.
In the 1891 census as Selby Baker (aged 45, born in Frpnsham, Surrey, widowed, and a county council park labourer) and living with a lodger (George Sully aged 30, born in Williton, Semersekhire, single and a milkman) each in a single room at 25 Anerly Street, Battersea, London (another family lived at the same address).
In the 1901 census as Selby Baker aged 55, born in Churt, Surrey, status changed from married to single, a gardener, and lodging with Frederick Wood (aged 26, born in Highfield and a general labourer), his wife (Florence aged 27 and born in Highfield Row), son (Frederick aged 3 and born in Bowes Park, Middlesex), a nurse child (Edward Wilkson aged 1 and born in Bowes Park, Middlesex) and another lodger (Sidney Pearce aged 22, born in Hornsey, London, single and a carpenter) at 2 Myrtle Cottages, Southgate, Middlesex.
In Bakers of Headley it states John’s ninth child, Selby, was baptized on 6 October 1844. The 1881 census records him as living, unmarried, at Crosswaters Farm: he was a pork butcher.
Susan F Belsey has an entry for Selby Baker baptised on 6 October 1844, parents John Baker and Mary Moore, and a pork butcher living at Crosswaters Farm.
Note Barnet was in Middlesex 1852-1946.
Selby Baker was my half first cousin three times removed.
