Notes

I cannot identify an entry in FreeBMD for her birth but there were four unnamed female Bakers registered in 1838 in Farnham - April-June (4 106), July-September (4 94) and two in October-December (4 87 - there are two on the original type written copy but a duplication may have occurred when the handwritten original was typed).

Christening of Massy Baker in the IGI on 21 October 1838 in Frensham, Surrey, parents Stephen and Ann Baker. The same information is in the West Surrey Family History Society Frensham Baptisms but spelling her name Massey, and adding Stephen was a shopkeeper. I assume the vicar had not got to grips with the local accent.

In the 1841 census as Martha Baker (sic - on the original) aged 2, born in Surrey and living with Stephen and Ann (parents?), John and William (brothers?) and Mary (sister?) at Lower Churt, Farnham, Surrey

In the 1851 census as Mercy Baker aged 13, born in Frensham, and living with her grandfather John Loveland, his daughter (Jane), grandson (William Loveland), and a servant (Samuel Larby - son of Henry Larby and Maria Chandler) at Hillside, Frensham, Surrey.

In the 1861 census as Mercy Baker aged 25, born in Franthan (sic - in the index, Frensham on the original), Surrey, and a servant with Eliza White (aged 36, born in Kennington, Surrey, unmarried, no stated employment, stated to be daughter, but her parents are unknown), a visitor (Elizabeth Maffey aged 53, born in Lockerley, Hampshire, unmarried and no stated employment) and seven other servants at 11 Montague Place, Clapham Road, Lambeth, Surrey.

Marriage of Mercy Baker and Joseph Leggett in FreeBMD in July-September 1863 in Lambeth (1d 498).

Marriage of Mercy Baker and Joseph Leggett in the IGI on 7 June 1863 at St Mary, Lambeth, Surrey.

There are two entries in Ancestry London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 for the banns of Mercy Baker and Joseph Leggett on 22 May 1863 at Lambeth St Mary, "Banns Published 24 & 31 May & 7 June 1863 [...] +444 Joseph Leggett Bachelor and Mercy Baker Spinster 7 July", and for the marriage of Mercy Baker, father Stephen Baker, and Joseph Leggett Jr, father Joseph Leggett on 7 July 1863 at Lambeth St Mary. "1863 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of St Mary Lambeth in the County of Surrey No, 312 7th July 1863 Joseph Leggett Jr of full age, a bachelor and packer of South Lambeth, father Joseph Leggett, a horse doctor, and Mercy Baker of full age, a spinster of South Lambeth, father Stephen Baker (Descd), a farmer. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns in the Presence of us, Joseph Leggwett and Elizth ? Leggett."

Her children were christened at South Lambeth St Stephen (however Elizabeth Jane appears to have also been christened at South Lambeth St Anne) and their address was 2 Cottage Place in all.

In the 1871 census as Mary (sic - in the index, but has been corrected on the original to Mercy) Leggett aged 32, born in Farnham, Surrey and living with her husband (Joseph), son (Joseph F), two daughters (Elizabeth and Mary (sic - corrected on the original to Mercy A)), and three boarders (Charles King aged 23, born in Hampshire, unmarried and employed as a gardener, Mary Legge aged 79, born in Suffolk, widowed and no stated employment, and James Symes aged 60, born in Martock, Somerset, married and employed as a hay salesman) at 2 Cottage Place, South Lambeth Road, Lambeth, Surrey (this address was shared with another family).

In the 1881 census as Mercy Baker aged 42, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with her husband (Joshua - sic on the original), son (Joseph S), two daughters (Elizth Jane and Mercy), a lodger (John Baker - Mercy's brother), a boarder (Hannah Coombes aged 77, born in Woolwich, Kent, married and an annuitant) and another lodger (Thos. Jones aged 28, born in Kings Pyon, Hereford, unmarried and employed as a railway carpenter) at 2 Cottage Place, South Lambeth Road, Lambeth, Surrey (this address was shared with another family).

In the 1891 census as Mercy Leggett aged 52, born in Frensham and living with her husband (Joseph), son (Claude), daughter (Lillie - this must be Elizabeth), and two lodgers (Walter Beaumont aged 22 and employed as a clock maker and watch winder and Arthur Swain aged 23 and employed as a carpenter - both single and born in Lambeth) at 3a Wheatsleaf Lane, Lambeth (another family was living at the same address. Arthur Swain would marry Elizabeth Jane in the autumn. I am not sure who Claude was - I cannot find any entry in FreeBMD for his birth and Mercy would have been 50 when he was born.

Death of Mercy Leggett in FreeBMD in July-September 1899 aged 60 in Lambeth (1d 307).

Note Lambeth was transfered from Surrey to London in 1889.
