In the 1841 census as James Bakes (sic - in the index, Baker on the original) aged 25 (this is about 2 years too old - I suspect his age was rounded up instead of down to a multiple of 5), born in Surrey, a male servant, and living with Sarah Keese (aged 80, not born in Surrey and of independent means), Mary Bakes (his first cousin once removed, daughter of Richard Baker, and two other male servants (George Hammons aged 14 and Fredrick Smith aged 12, both born in Surrey) at Upper West End, Frensham, Surrey.

His two children were born in Frensham in 1844 and 1849.

His wife died in Frensham in 1853.

In the 1861 census as James Baker aged 47, born in Frensham, Surrey, widowed, an agricultural labourer, and lodging with William Beagley (aged 65, born in Compton, Surrey and a cordwainer), his wife (Mary aged 41 and born in Ockham, Surrey), two sons (James Beagley aged 14 and an agricultural labourer, and William A Beagley aged one month in the index, two months on the original, both born in Ockham, Surrey), and two other lodgers (Charles Plumbridge aged 25, born in Ockham, Surrey, and Charles Renment aged 17, born in Frensham, Surrey, both single and agricultural labourers) in Heathside, Ockham, Surrey.
