His brother was born on 30 August 1878, registered in October-December 1878 in Alton, and baptised on 11 October 1878 at St Andrew, Farnham, parents William, a grocer of Alton, and Elizabeth Dinah Baker.

In the 1881 census as Alfred W Baker aged 5, born in Alton, Hampshire, and living with his parents (William and Elizh D), brother (Leonard L) and a general servant (Lillie Pickell aged 16 and born in Alton, Hampshire) in High Street, Alton, Hampshire.

In the 1891 census as Alfred W Baker aged 15, born in Alton, Hampshire, and a pupil at Farnham Grammer School, 25 West Street, Farnham, Surrey. There were only four other pupils - the headmaster was Charles Stroud aged 60, and born in Lymington, Hampshire, and the second master was his son William aged 33, and third master was another son Patrick E aged 28, both born in Farnham. His parents and brother were living in Alton High Street.

His mother died on 31 March 1896, her death was registered in April-June 1896 in Alton, and was buried on 4 April 1896 at St Lawrence, Alton.

In the 1901 census as Alfred William Baker aged 25, born in Alton, Hampshire, single, an assistant shopkeeper, and living with his widowed father (William), brother (Leward Stedston), and two servants (Elizabeth Hope Mood aged 41, born in Betley, Hampshire, single and a housekeeper, and Alice Barber aged 13 and born in Alton, Hampshire) in the High Street, Alton, Hampshire.

In the 1911 census as Alfred Baker aged 35, born in Alton, Hampshire, single, a grocer working at home, and living with his widowed father (William) and brother (Leonard) in ten rooms at 70 High Street, Alton, Hampshire.

His father's death was registered in April-June 1918 in Alton, and was buried on 5 April 1918 at St Lawrence, Alton when he lived at Wilson Cottages.

In the 1921 census as Alfred William Baker aged 45 years 2 months, single, born in Alton, Hampshire, a grocer's assistant employed by E Loe Grocery of the Market, Alton, and living with a visitor (Leonard Stidston Baker - brother?) in two rooms at Lime Kilr (sic - in the index, Kiln on the original) Cottage, Alton, Hampshire.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register as Alfred Baker born 14 March 1876, single, a grocer, and living with Leonard Baker (brother?), Elizabeth Lilywhite (changed from White, born 13 September 1887 and widowed) and Elizabeth M White (changed from Lilywhite, born 19 February 1920, single and a Stationer's shop assistant) at 4 Limekiln Cottages, Wilsom, Alton, Hampshire. Eliza Lillywhite's death was registered in October-December 1947 in Alton.

Elizabeth Lilywhite was also living at Lime Kiln Cottages in the 1921 census - her husband was killed on 1 September 1917 in Asia?, and left two children, but the census lists a third child Elizabeth Mary Lilywhite who was 1 year 4 months old, born 19 February 1920 from the 1939 Register, and was registered in January-March 1920 (spelt Lillywhite) in Alton. Some believe that either Alfred William or Leonard Stidston Baker was the father. Her marriage to John White (her name spelt Lillywhite) was registered in January-March 1940 in Portsmouth, and a daughter Patricia M White registered in April-June 1940 in Alton (mother's maiden name Lillywhite), and whose death was registered in June 2002 in West Surrey as Elizabeth Mary White born 19 February 1920.
