His daughter was born and died in February 1860 in Whitsome, Berwickshire.

"1860 Marriages in the Parish of Whitsome in the County of Berwick [...] No. 2 On the Twentieth day of July at Hilton Marriage (after Banns) was solemnized between us according to the Forms of the Free Church of Scotland (Signed) Walter Ainslie aged 25 of Hilton, Blacksmith Bachelor parents William Ainslie Blacksmith Margaret Ainslie Maiden Name Laidlaw, and (Signed) Mary Ann Purves aged 23 of Wyssefield [was this Winfield?], Spinster, parents John Purves (Shepherd) and Christiane Purves Maiden Name Sligh". Robt Purves was a witness.

In the 1861 census as Walter Ainslie aged 25, born in Melrose, Roxburghshire, a blacksmith, and living with his parents (William and Margaret), and three sisters (Elisabeth, Janet and Margaret) in Hilton, Whitsome, Berwickshire. His wife and son were living with her parents in Winfield, Berwickshire. (Winfield is just east of Hilton).

His occupation changed from blacksmith to quarryman between 1864 and 1867 from the birth of his children, all born in Whitsome.

In the 1871 census as Walter Ainslie aged 35, born in Midren, Roxburghshire, a quarreyman and living with his wife (Mary) and two sons (John and William) in Whitsome Village, Whitsome, Berwickshire.

He was the informant and present at his fathers death on 2 July 1873 when he was living in Miller Street, Innerleithen.
