I cannot find an entry in the Register of Births for 1852-1854.

His father died in 1857.

In the 1861 census as Mathew Ackroyd, aged 8, born in Knaresborough, and living with his widowed mother (Elizebeth), brother (William) and three sisters (Elizebeth Ann , Hannah and Sarah Jane (actually his neice)) at Calverleys Yard, Knaresborough.

In the 1871 census as Matthew Akroyd (sic - in the index, correct on the original), aged 17, born in Knaresborough, employed as an apprentice joiner, and living with his widowed mother (Elizabeth), sister (Elizabeth Ann) and a lodger (Joseph Hornsby aged 59, born in Manchester, Lancashire, unmarried, and employed as a joiner) at Windsor Lane, Knaresborough.

In the 1881 census as Matthew Ackroyd aged 27, born in Knaresborough, a joiner out of employ,and living with his widowed mother (Elizabeth) at Calverleys Yard, Windsor Lane, Knaresborough.

In the 1891 census as Matthew Ackroyd aged 40, born in Knaresborough, employed as a general labourer, and living with some 35 other boarders at the British Workman's Lodging House, 71 Wapping Road, Bradford run by Sampson and Ada Robinson.

Death of Matthew Ackroyd in FreeBMD in April-June 1893 aged 39 in Knaresborough. (9a 68).
