In the 1851 census as John Abbey aged 23, born in Knaresbro, Yorkshire, a cord wainer, and living with his wife (Susanna) in Saint Hill, Wortley, Leeds, Yorkshire.

In the 1861 census as John Abbey aged 33, born in Knaresbro, Yorkshire, a journeyman shoe maker, and living with his wife (Susan) and brother (Issac Abbey - I believe this to be his brother-in-law Isaac Binks) at 7 Commercial Street, Armley, Yorkshire.

In the 1871 census as John Abbey aged 43, born in Knaresborough Yorkshire, a grocer and beer retailer, and living with his wife (Susan) at the Perservance Inn, 12 Rutland Street. Armley, Yorkshire.

His wife died in Bramley in 1875.

In the 1881 census as John Abbey aged 53, born in Knaresbro, Yorkshire, married, a labourer in a lime quarry, and boarding with John Potter (aged 27, born in Longsutton, Lincoln and a labourer in a lime quarry), his wife (Mary aged 23 and born in Eastrington, Yorkshire), and a another boarder (George Tate aged 18, born in Selby, Yorkshire, single and a hurrier at coal pit) in New Micklefield, Yorkshire.

In the 1891 census as John Abbey born in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, married, and a pauper and shoemaker living in the Sculcoates Union Workhouse, Beverley Road, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire.
