His mother died in Singleton in 1829.

I cannot find him in the 1841 census.

There are two entries in Ancestry London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 for the banns of John Scammell and Harriet Bridger, both of this parish on 2, 9 and 16 September 1849 at Newington St Mary, Southwark for the marriage of John Scammell, father Cornelius Scammell, and Harriett Bridger, father Thomas Bridger, at Newington St Mary, Southwark. "1849 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of St Mary Newington in the County of Surrey No 5 17 September 1849 John Scammell a bachelor and labourer of full age living in Uxbridge Street, father Cornelius Scammell, a labourer, and Harriett Bridger, a spinster of full age living in Uxbridge Street, father Thomas Bridger, a labourer, married after banns witnessed by William Cooper and Harriet Turton".

In the christening entry for his son John in 1850 he is stated to be a charcoal dealer.

In the 1851 census as John Saumell (sic - in the index, Scammell on the original) aged 23, born in Singleton, Sussex, married, no stated employment, and lodging at Joseph Wakefield aged 29, born in Beaminster, Essex and an agricultural labourer), his wife (Ann aged 28 and born in Battersea, Surrey), son (James aged 7 and born in Battersea, Surrey), and two daughters (Maria aged 12, and Milicent aged 2, both born in Battersea, Surrey) in New Street, Battersea, Surrey. His wife was visiting William and Jane Allen in Middlebridge Street, in Romsey Infra, Winchester.

His two sons and daughter were born in Battersea Fields (now in the area of Battersea Park) in 1852 to 1857 where he was a charcoal dealer.

In the 1861 census as John Scammell aged 34, born in Leighton, Sussex, a labourer, single and lodging at 27 and 28 Castle Street, St Andrew Holborn, Middlesex. About 130 men were living at this address. His wife was living at 9 York Street, Battersea, Surrey with his son Henry and daughter Mary. His other son Joseph was living with his wife's mother.

"1867 Marriage solemized at St John Church in the Parish of St John Waterloo in the County of Surrey No 95 Aug 3 1867 John Scammell of full age, a widower and a labourer of Rowpell Street, father Cornelius Scammell, a labourer, and Esther Muspratt of full age, a spinster of Cornwall Road, father Henry Muspratt, a whip maker in the Parish Church by banns witnessed by Robt Jones and Mary Davis."

His daughter was born in St Giles in 1870.

In the 1901 census as John Scammell aged 74, born in Singleton, Sussex, a charcoal dealer working on his own account, and living with his wife (Esther), son (Rueben) and two daughters (Elizabeth and Emma) in two rooms at 1 Great Peter Street Street, St Margaret and St John the Evangelist, Westminster, London. Two other families shared this address.

His wife died in St George Hanover Square in October-December 1905 (on page 326).
