Birth of George Marden in FreeBMD in July-September 1881 in Farnham (2a 125).
In the 1891 census as George Marden aged 9, born in Frensham, and living with his parents (Stephen and Mennie), brother (Frank), two sisters (Ada and Maud), and grandmother (Eliza Baker) in four rooms in Churt, Frensham, Surrey (this was apparently shared with another family who apparently shared the same four rooms, and was next door to the Pride of the Valley (on Hindhead Road).
In the 1901 census as George Marden aged 18, born in Churt, Surrey, single and an ordinary seaman on the HMS Pioneer in Bighi Bay, Malta. HMS Pioneer was a Pelorus third class light cruiser launched at Chatham, Kent on 28 June 1899, by a Miss Andoe. She was completed on 23 January 1900 and on 15 November 1900 she was sent to the Mediterranean Station where she relieved the cruiser HMS Fearless. She served for four years in Mediterranean waters, returning to Chatham on 20 December 1904 where she was placed in Reserve. She was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1912 and saw action in World War I against the German cruiser Koenigsberg of the east coast of Africa. She was later laid up in Sydney Harbour as an accommodation Ship, and Scuttled outside Sydney harbour in 19th February 1931. her armament was 8 x 4-inch (25-pounder) guns, 8 x 3-pounder guns, 2 x 14-inch torpedo tubes (above water), 2 x field guns and 3 x .45 Maxim guns. Her complement was 244 and she had a speed of 20 knots.
George Marden was my third cousin once removed.
