I am not sure who her parents are, but she is either a niece or grandneice of John Croucher. There is a family with children born in Steep at the same time - Thomas and Mary A Croucher. His mother was Jane Croucher who I believe was the daughter of George and Jane, and had Thomas before her marriage. However I cannot find a connection between the two families, and Thomas was only 14 when he married if this is correct.
In the 1851 census as Jane Croucher aged 5, born in Steep, Hampshire, and living with her great uncle John Croucher, his wife (Ann), two sons (George and William) and two daughters (Elizabeth and Mary A) at Peake Cottage, East Meon, Hampshire.
In the 1861 census as Jane Coucher, aged 13, born in Steep, Hampshire, and living with her uncle John Croucher, his wife (Ann), son (George), two daughters (Elizabeth and Mary A) and mother-in-law (Ann Trimmer) at Ivy House, Froxfield, Hampshire.
In the 1871 census as Jane Croncher (sic - in the index, corrrect on the original) aged 23, born in Hampshire, unmarried and employed as a seamstress, and living with her uncle John Croncher (note its states she was his neice on the original but daughter in the index) and his wife (Ann Croncher), and their son (John) and daughter (Mary A) at Fair Oak Lodge, Haben, Rogate, Sussex (about 1 mile south of Rogate).
I cannot find her in the 1881 census, but she was not with her uncle.
In the 1891 census as Jane Croucher aged 41, single, born in Steep, employed as a housekeeper and living with her uncle John Croucher, his wife (Ann) and idiot daughter (Mary A) at Habin, Rogate, Sussex (4 rooms).
Her aunt died in 1892 and uncle in 1897. Mary was in the workhouse in 1901, but I cannot find any later information for Jane.
