In the 1881 census as Jas Croucher aged 12, born in Portsea, and living with his parents (Chas ansd Sarah), two brothers (Chas and Richd) and five sisters (Charlotte, Ellen, Rachel, Sarah and Theresa) at 1 Crown St, St Mary, Landport, Portsea.

His mother died shortly afterwards in 1881.

In the 1891 census as James Croucher, aged 20, born in Portsmouth, unmarried, employed as a stoker navy, and living with his widowed father (Charles), two brothers (Charles and Richard), and two sisters (Ellen and Rachel) at 1 Crown St, St Mary, Landport, Portsea.
