In the 1871 census as William Young aged 5, born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, and living with his parents (Abraham and Mary), brother (James) and sister (Alice) at 44 Cottage View, Landport, Portsea, Hampshire.
In the 1881 census as William Young aged 15, born in Portsea, Hampshire and a boy 2nd class on HMS St Vincent (this was actually on the training brig Martin at the buoy off HMS St Vincent in Portsmouth Harbour, Hampshire. HMS Martin was a Sailing Brig and tender to 'St. Vincent' as overflow ship. HMS St Vincent was built at Plymouth Dockyard and launched 11th March 1815 as a first rate 120 gun ship of the line of the Nelson Class. She served as flagship at Portsmouth and served in 1840 in the Mediterranean and Channel. She was commissioned as a training ship in 1862, and specifically as a training ship for boys, moored permanently at Haslar from 1870. In this role she retained 26 guns. She was sold in 1906.

In the 1901 census as William Young aged 35, born in Portsea, Hampshire, a petty officer 1st class, married, and on HMS Monarch, a third class screw battleship in Simon's Bay, Cape of Good Hope, Africa. HMS Monarch was built at Chatham Dockyard, and launched 25th May 1868, the first seagoing turret ship and the fastest ship of her day. She was armour plated, screw propelled and 8332 tons. She broke down at sea in 1885, was towed to Malta for repairs, and returned to England for a major modernisation scheme from 1890 - 1897.
In the 1911 census as William Young aged 45 and living with Harriet (wife?) in Fareham, Hampshire.
William George Young was the second cousin of Ellen, wife of Thomas Paine, my eighth cousin three times removed.
