In the 1861 census as William James Young aged 11 months, born in New Shoreham, Sussex, and living with his parents (William and Emma) in New Road, New Shoreham, Sussex.

In the 1871 census as William Young aged 10, born in Shoreham, and living with his parents (William and Emma), and three sisters (Bessie, Kate and Sarah) in Commercial Terrace, New Shoreham, Sussex.

In the 1881 census as William Young aged 20, born in Shoreham, Sussex, single, a gardener and living with his parents (William and Emma), brother (John), and four sisters (Alice, Annie, Bessie, and Mercy) at 2 Commercial Terrace, New Shoreham, Sussex.

I cannot find an entry for his marriage but there is an entry in FreeBMD for Jane Elizabeth Still in January-March 1886 in Steyning (2b 381) but no husband.

In the 1891 census as William J Young aged 30, born in Shoreham, Sussex, a gardener, and living with his wife (Jane), two daughters (Catherine and Emily) and a boarder (George Still aged 20, born in Shoreham, single and a gardener - his brother-in-law) in four rooms in Lower Road, New Shoreham.

In the 1901 census as William J Young aged 40, born in Shoreham, Sussex, a domestic gardener working on his own account, and living with his wife (Jane E), two sons (Frederick J and William G), and three daughters (Catherine E J, Emily and Nellie E) in four rooms at 7 Freehold Street, New Shoreham.

In the 1911 census as William James Young aged 50, and living with Jane Elizabeth (wife?), Frederick James and William (sons?) and Catherine Ellen Jane, Emily and Nellie Elizabeth (daughters?) in Steyning, Sussex.

Relationship

William James Young was the second cousin of Ellen, wife of Thomas Paine, my eighth cousin three times removed.
