In 1929, she attended Lees McCrae College. Upon graduation in 1931, she began teaching in a one-room, oneteacher school in Swain County. That same year, she met Samuel P. Hyatt, who was principal of a school nearby. They were married in 1932. Mrs. Hyatt attended Western Carolina Teachers College.
Her first child, Robert, was born in 1933. Her daughter, Theresa, was born in 1936, and her daughter, Frances, in 1940. During that time, she assisted Mr. Hyatt as an educator who served schools in Western North Carolina before coming to work on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in 1941. Mrs. Hyatt was very active in the life of the government employees at Cherokee. She was comanager of a restaurant operated by the Cherokee Historical Association and a substitute teacher in several Reservation schools during the 1940s and 50s. Mrs. Hyatt was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church, including membership at Shoal Creek Baptist Church, Whittier, and West Asheville Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hyatt leaves her husband of 75 years, Samuel P. Hyatt; three children and their spouses, Robert and Emily Hyatt, Theresa and Joseph Cotten, and Frances and William Hockman; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Katherine and Rusty Creekmore, Victoria and Ron Sowers, Russell and Pamela Hyatt, Elizabeth and Bobby Davis, Leslie and Scott Moore, Stan and Patti Cotten, Gregory Hockman, Michelle and Paul Cunningham, Angela Hockman and Katie Wolf; 12 great-grandchildren, Samantha and Ryan Hyatt, Phillip and Christopher Davis, Brandon and Luke Moore, Annie and Jessie Cotten, Jack and Cole Hockman, and Grace and Lucy Cunningham. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Gentry, of Columbia, S.C., as well as 11 nieces and 15 nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shoal Creek Baptist Church, near Cherokee, with the Rev. Stephen Jamison officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers include her three grandsons, Gregory Hockman, Stan Cotten and Russell Hyatt; and three grandsons-in-law, John Rusty Creekmore, Paul Cunningham and Scott Moore. Honorary pallbearer are her sons-in-law, Joseph Cotten and William Hockman; and grandsons-in-law, Bobby Davis and Ronald Sowers.
Burial will follow the service in Thomas Memorial Cemetery.
