Entry in Ancestry Warwickshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, 1813-1910 for Herbert Thomas Wilkins on 3 April 1888 in Wolston, parents John Frederick and Kate Wilkins. "Page 197 Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Wolston in the County of Warwick in the Year 1888 [...] April 3rd No. 1573 Herbert Thomas parents John Frederick, a Plasterer, and Kate Wilkins of Bretford".

In the 1891 census as Herbert I Wilkins aged 3 months, born in Bretford, Warwickshire, and living with his parents (John F and Kate), and brother (Leonard W) and sister (Winifred) in 3 rooms in Brandon and Bretford, Warwickshire.

The family appears to have split up before the next census with his father living in Brinklow, Warwickshire and his mother living with her married sister Mary New and family in Witley, Surrey. His mother may have been ill as she died soon after the census.

In the 1901 census as Herbert Wilkins, born in Bretford, Warwickshire, and visiting Edwin and Mary Luff (his uncle and aunt), three nephews (Alfred, Edwin, and Thomas) and five neices (Agnes, Ella, Ethel, Kate and Mabel) in Ladycross Road, Witley, Surrey.

His mother died in 1902 in Rugby.

In the 1911 census as Herbert Thomas Wilkins aged 22, born in Britford, Warwickshire, single and a private in the Bedf Regt Infantry, Bermuda and Jamaica.

Entry in Ancestry British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920 for Herbert Thomas Wilkins aged 19 yrs 11 months, born in Bedford (sic - in the index, Britford on the original), near Rugby, Warwickshire, a plasterer, attested on 5 December 1909 for 12 years in the Bedford Regiment at Bedford. Height 5ft 5.6 in, weight 136 lbs, chest 37 + 3 inches, fresh complexion, grey eyes, red hair, moles on left calf and right shoulder blade, fit for service. On 1 October 1910 tried by civil power at Bedford for using threatening and abusive language in the public streets sentenced to 10 days confinement. On 9 September 1915 was absent and on 4 October 1915 declared a deserter and struck off strength and a court of enquiry. Arrested 25 October 1915, tried on 3 November 1915 charged with when on active service deserting His Majusty's Service, leaving by neglect his equipment, clothing and regimental necessaries. Sentenced to be placed under stoppage of pay until he has made good the sum of 4/9 in respect of the articles. 3 months detention remitted. Former service forfeited. Released from detention 1 April 1916, dischaged 2 May 1916 no longer physically fit for war service. Did not serve abroad with the Expeditionary Force. He served at home from 5 December 1907 to 23 September 1908, Gibralter from 24 September 1908 to 6 January 1910, Bermuda from 7 January 1910 to 14 January 1912, Africa from 15 January 1912 to 19 September 1914, Home from 20 September 1914 to 9 September 1915, and from 3 November 1915 to 2 May 1916. Educated at Duke of York's Military School, Royal Hibernian Military School, Industrial School and gained 3rd class certificate. Next of kin father John and brother Leonard. The intended address on discharge was 1 Stan Street, Ware, Bedfordshire. His character was indifferent. Discharged due to phlebitis origin in April 1913 in South Africa. Ammo box fell of a wagon and pinned him to the ground, the corner of the box being in his groin, which probably lit up an old infection from a ? ? in Bermuda 27 October 1911. There is a scar about 7 inches long in his groin (left). Odema of the whole leg.
