The family moved from Tiverton to Truro in the spring/summer of 1877 from the birth and death of his sister Mary.

In the 1881 census as Francis W Stubbs aged 5, born in Bradninch, Devon, and living with his parents (John and Mary), three brothers (Arthur G, Frederick and Percival), two sisters (Beatrice and Mary E), (half)sister (Florence), and a servant (Adelaide Manley aged 15, and born in Scorrior, Cornwall) in Edwards Street, Truro St Mary, Cornwall.

His brother was born in Truro in 1881, but his sister and three brothers were born in Tiverton in 1882 to 1887.

In the 1891 censusas Walter Statts (sic - in the index, correct on the original) aged 15, born in Bradninch, Devon, a blacksmith's apprentice, and living with his parents (John and Mary), and two sisters (Beatrice and Mary Emily) in Bampton Street, Tiverton, Devon.

In the 1901 census as Walter Stubbs aged 25, born in Bradninch, Devon, single, a draper and employer at home, and living with his parents (John and Mary), sister (Mary E), half-sister (Florence) and a general servant (Emma M Webber aged 15 and born in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon) at 8 Bampton Street, Tiverton, Devon.
