Christening of Walker (sic) Smithers in the IGI on 20 October 1892 in Witley, Surrey, parents Levi and Rhoda Smithers.

His brother and sisters were also born in Witley in 1894 to 1900.

In the 1901 census as Walter Smithers aged 8, born in Wiltley, Surrey, and living with his parents (Levi and Rhoda), four brothers (Alfred J, Arthur, Leonard and William), half-brother (Levi), and three sisters (Clara, Hilda May and Ruth) at New Farm, Grayswood, Witley, Surrey.

His father died in Hambledon in 1909.

In the 1911 census as Walter Smithers aged 18, born in Witley, Surrey, single, an assistant on farm at home and living with his widowed mother (Rhoda), four brothers (Alfred, Arthur, Lenard and William), three sisters (Clara, Hilda and Ruth) and three cousins (Dorothy, Eva and Jane) in eight rooms at New Farm, Grayswood, Haslemere, Surrey.

Entry in Ancestry British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 for Walter Smithers Number T1/4216 in the Army Service Corps in 1914-18 awarded the Victory Medal and British Star 1915 having served in Egypt 1 November 1915.

Entry in Ancestry UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 for Walter Smithers born in Haslemere, number T1/4216, a DVR in the Royal Army Service Corps who enlisted in Guildford and died on 7 October 1918 in the Balkans.

Entry in the Commonwealth War Graves Commision for W Smithers, aged 26, son of Rhoda Smithers of Homeleigh, Grayswood, Haslemere, Surrey, number T1/4216 in Army Service Corps 856th Horse Transport Coy. on 7 October 1918, and buried in plot 252 at Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Greece. The cemetery is some 15 kilometres north east of Thessaloniki, on the outskirts of the village of Exochi (formerly Kirechkoi), adjacent to the village communal cemetery, just off the road to Hortakoi. The cemetery was begun in March 1916, but it remained a very small one until September 1917, when the 60th, 65th and 66th General Hospitals came to the neighbourhood. In June, July and September 1918, other hospitals were brought to the high and healthy country beside the Salonika-Hortakoi road and in September 1918, the influenza epidemic began which raged for three months and filled three-quarters of the cemetery.
