In the 1841 census as John Smith (sic - in the index, Smithers on the original) aged 15, born in Surrey, and living with Isaac and Ann (parents?) in Hambledon Common, Hambledon, Surrey.
In the 1851 census as John Smithers aged 25, born in Witley, Surrey, single, a farmer's son, and living with his parents (Isaac and Ann) in Hambledon Hurst, Hambledon, Surrey.
In the 1861 census as John Smithers aged 35, born in Witley, Surrey, single, a hurdle maker, and living with his parents (Isaac and Ann), and a servant (William Hutchins aged 17 and born in Hambledon, Surrey) near the brickyard, Hambledon, Surrey.
His mother died in 1867.
His father's housekeeper Mary Stilwell had a son Sydney Smithers Stilwell christened in Hambledon on 12 December 1869, but only the mother's name is given. I guess John Smithers was the father, but they never married.
