In the 1861 census as John Shrubb aged 3 months, born in North Mundham, Sussex and living with his parents (Job and Ann), sister (Emma) and a lodger (William Shrubb - his first cousin) at Vinnetrow Cottages, North Mundham, Sussex.
His brother Charles was christened in Arundel in 1863, sister Jane was born in Arundel in 1865, and his brother William was born in Appledram in 1869.
In the 1871 census as John Shrubb aged 13, born in North Mundham, Sussex, an agricultural labourer and living with his parents (Job and Ann), three brothers (Charles, Tern and William) in Appledram, Sussex.
In the 1881 census as John Shrub aged 22, born in Arundel, Sussex, single, a labourer and living with his parents (Job and Ann), two brothers (Charles and William), and sister (Jean) in Malvern Cottages, Wick, Leominster, Sussex (this address was shared with another family).
