His mother was the informant and as she made her mark I assume she could not write.

On the copy of entry of marriage number 379 George Payne married Frances Downs on 16 July 1861 in the parish church of St James Clerkenwell in Middlesex. I cannot find this in the London A-Z, but from the census it is close to Westminster Bridge Road near St George's Circus.

On a copy of the Entry of Birth No. 211 in 1874 in London Road, St Saviour, Surrey for Emma Louisa Alice Payne born on 30 April 1874 at 13 Tower Street, Southwark, George William Payne, a brass finisher, is her father.

His wife died in 1877.

From information in his son's military records he was living at 9 Dorset Street, Newington Causeway, SE during the war. However he appears to have moved by 1922 as a postcard was returned returned to sender at Gloucester Buildings, Regents Park marked Gone Away.

His address is given as 49 Buckingham Road, Margate and the death was reported by the occupier of Hill House, Minster, A E Fussell, on 19 January 1926.

My father's records state he was an engineer, born 23 January 1841 and died at Margate in 1915.

Moved from St Lukes to Lambeth about 1865, to Southwark about 1867, to Deptford St Paul before 1881, but then moved back to Southwark. Buckingham Road is off the A254 Ramsgate Road just south of the railway line. Minster is some 6 miles SW.
