Birth of of Joseph Victor Paine in the IGI on 27 March 1874, and his christening on 26 April 1874 at Saint Mark, Notting Hill, London, parents Joseph and Emma Paine.

In the 1881 census as Joseph Payne aged 7, born in Brighton, and living with his parents (Joseph and Emma), two brothers (Charles and Stephen) and two sisters (Caroline and Emma) at 10 Picton Street, Brighton St Peter.

In the 1891 census as Joseph V Paine aged 17, born in London, employed as an apprentice moulder, and living with his parents (Joseph and Emma), and two brothers (Charles H and Stephen S) and sister (Isabella M) at 56 Bentham Road, Brighton St Luke (off Elm Grove west of the hospital).
