In the 1861 census as William Millman (sic - in the index, Mileman on the original) aged 16, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, a paper nicker in a paper mill, and living with his mother (Eliza Millman), (step)father (Thomas Millman), (half)brother (John) and (half)sister (Mary A) in Meeting Alley, Watford, Hertfordshire. There is also an entry for William Rainbow aged 15, born in Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, working in a paper mill, and lodging with John Harris (aged 61, born in Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire and a mill labourer) and his wife (Sarah aged 61 and born in Aldenham, Hertfordshire) in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

No. 174 March 21st William Rainbow Mileman aged 23, a Bachelor and Labourer of Pinner, father Thomas Mileman, a Labourer, and Emily Dell aged 23, a Spinster of Pinner, father Joseph Dell, a Labourer. Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after banns [...] in the Presence of us Thomas Dean and Maria Dell [who made her mark]".

His daughter was born in Hendon in 1868 and son in Islington in 1870.

In the 1871 census as William Mileman aged 25, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, a railway carman, and living with his wife (Emily), son (Henry W, daughter (Rose M) and brother-in-law (George Dell) at 11a Upper Hartland Road, Kentish Town, St Pancras, London. Two other families lived at the same address.

In the 1881 census as William Mileman aged 35, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, a carman, and living with his wife (Emily), son (Harry W), and three daughters (Emilia C, Emily M and Rose M) at 6 Winchester Mews, Acton , Middlesex.

His daughter was born in Ealing in 1882. In the entry for his two daughters' christening on 28 December 1888 at St Augustine, Kilburn, Westminster he is stated to be a coffee stall keeper.

In the 1891 census as William Wileman (sic - in the index, Mileman on the original) aged 45, born in Watford, Hertfordshire, a coffee stall keeper, and living with his wife (Emily) and two daughters (Amelia and Mabel) in three rooms at 27 Netherwood Street, Hampstead, London. Another three families lived at the same address.

In the 1901 census as William R Mileman aged 56, born in Watford,herfordshire, a coffee stall keeper, and living with his wife (Emily), daughter (Helen Mabel) and nephew (Arthur G Atkins aged 26, born in St Pancras, London, single and a coffee stalll assistant) at 17 Netherwood Street, Hampstead, London. Another two families including Fanny Atkins (aged 53, born in Eastcot, Middlesex, widowed and a charwoman).

Entry in Ancestry Public Member Trees for William Rainbow or Mileman born in Watford, Hertfordshire in December 1845, parents Thomas Mileman and Eliza Rainbow. A similar entry gives his birth in 1846, and another gives his mother as Elizabeth Rainbow. Another adds his marriage to Emily Dell on 21 March 1868 in Pinner, two daughters and a son, but not Amelia.
