In the 1871 census as James Knight aged 14, born in St Giles, Middlesex, an errand boy, and living with his widowed mother (Mary), brother (Henry), a nurse child (James Cox aged 11 months and born in St Pancras, Middlesex), and a lodger (John Fletcher aged 50) at 4 Chapel Place, St George Bloomsbury, London.
