In the 1841 census as Fanny King aged 20 (rounded down to a multiple of 5), not born in Surrey, a female servant and living with William Crate (aged 40, not born in Surrey, and a grocer), Mary aged 40 (his wife?), Ruth aged 10, William aged 8 and James aged 5 (his children?) all born in Surrey, in Downing Street, Farnham, Surrey.

In the 1851 census as Frances King aged 28, born in Frensham, Surrey, single, a house servant and living with Richard Hammond (aged 60, born in Frensham, and a farmer of 260 acres employing fourteen labourers), his wife (Hester aged 59 and born in Otterbourne, Hampshire) and another servant (George Hammond, aged 17, born in Frensham and a farm servant) in Spreakley, Frensham, Surrey.

In the 1861 census as Frances West aged 43, born in Frensham, Surrey, and living with her husband (Thomas West), her married neice (Ann Bradley aged 22, born in Frensham, married but not with her husband, and no stated employment) and her daughter (Elizabeth A aged 6 months and born in Frensham).

In the 1871 census as Frances West aged 49, born in Elvathan, Hampshire, and living with her husband (Thomas), daughter (Frances) and a boarder (Abraham Shrubb) at Bats Corner, Rowledge, Frensham.

In the 1881 census as Frances West aged 60, born in Hartly Bon, Hampshire, and living with her husband (Thomas) and a lodger (James Hale aged 50, born in Dockenfield, Hampshire, single, and an agricultural labourer) at Batts Corner, Frensham, Surrey.

She adopted Ernest Shrubb, son of Abraham, soon after his birth in 1882, his mother dying soon after the birth.

Her husband died in 1888.

In the 1891 census as Frances West aged 71, born in Hartley; Bow, Hampshire, widowed, and living on her own means with her adopted son Ernest Shrubb and a boarder (James Hale aged 57, born in Dockenfield, single and a general labourer) at Batts Corner, Frensham, Surrey.

Hawley is just north of the M3 at Farnborough Green (between J4 and J4a) - Elvetham Road is between Fleet and Hartley Wintley 2 miles to the west.

Relationship

Frances King was the adopted mother of Ernest Shrubb, my second cousin twice removed.
