Christening of Stephen Hall in the IGI on 26 April 1781 in Thursley, father Thomas Hall. There is an entry in the West Surrey Family History Society Thursley Baptisms for Stephen Hall on 26 April 1781, son of Thomas (Number 1598).There is an entry in the IGI for the christening of Sarah Hall on 22 December 1800 in Thursley, parents Stephen Hall and Elizabeth. There is no marriage and no other children. This entry is also in the West Surrey Family History Society Thursley Baptisms with the same information but also states that Stephen Hall and Elizabeth were of Frensham.
There is an entry in West Surrey Family History Society Frensham Baptisms for Sarah Hall on 12 May 1801 aged 5 months, daughter of Stephen Hall and Ann. Was this the same Sarah Hall and were Elizabeth and Ann the same person? There is no record of the death of Elizabeth Hall in Headley, Frensham or Thursley.
There is also an entry in the IGI for the christening of James Hall on 27 February 1805 in Headley, Hampshire, parents Stephen Hall and Anne. Again there is no marriage and no other children.
There is an entry in Headley Burials for the burial of Anne Hall on 9 June 1805 aged 30, the wife of Stephen. She is buried in Plot 31 East of the Chancel in All Saints Churchyard, Headley : In memory of / Anne / the wife of Stephen HALL / who departed this life / June 5, 1805 / aged 30 years / O cruel death! Who was to me severe / that took me from my husband and children dear. / Let no one think he can repent too soon / I found it night before I thought it noon. There is also an entry in Headley Wills dated 1821 for Ann Hall , wife of Stephen who died on 9 June 1805 - it is classed as Administration which implies there was no will, but was done afterwards to assign the persons goods - it seems a long gap.
There is an entry for the marriage of Stephen Hall and Sarah Wilsdon in the IGI on 27 February 1808 at Frensham, Surrey, and there are entries for the christenings of Harriot Hall in Headley and then Elizabeth, Edward and Hester at Frensham. There is also an entry in the West Surrey Family History Society Surrey Marriages for Stephen Hall of Headley, Hampshire and Sarah Wilsdon or Willsdon of this parish on 27 February 1808 in Frensham by licence.
Stephen Hall is described as a victualler in the entry in the West Surrey Family History Society Frensham Baptisms for his daughter Hester in 1814.
In Frensham Then and Now by Baker and Malchin Revised Edition 1948 p 18 'By an existing indenture dated June 24th, 1814, one John Henry Dell, presumably acting on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, leases the pond and fishing rights, "by nets or otherwise howsoever", to Stephen Hall, victualler, doubtless tennant of the adjacent inn, for the sum of £35 per annum, he undertaking to keep the "dams, bolts and sluices" in good repair.'
In the Headley Valuation of 1822 Stephen Hall is the occupier of White Horse, Frensham Pond with Pond Mead (1 acre 9 poles of pasture), Rick Close (7 poles of pasture), Upper Pond Mead (3 roods 5 poles of pasture) plus the house and garden (1 rood 26 poles of arable) giving a total of 9 acres and 15 roods (one acre is 4 roods or 160 poles).
There is an entry in Headley Burials for the burial of Stephen Hall of Frensham Pond on 21 April 1834 aged 60 (which would put his birth in about 1774).
There is an entry in Headley Wills dated 1835 for Stephen Hall buried 21 April 1834, victualler of Frensham Pond - this would have been the White Horse later called Frensham Pond Hotel which is on the border of Headley and Frensham, but was just inside the former (the border was changed in 1991 so it is now in Frensham). It is classed as Administration which implies there was no will, but was done afterwards to assign the persons goods.
I assume he lived in Headley all the time after his last marriage, but Frensham Church is very much closer to the Pond Hotel than Headley Church so his last three children were christened at Frensham, but the burials were in his true parish church.
There is a note in the Headley 1841/51 census against the entry for George Marden stating "White Horse, been in family since before 1800 - WHL IV.647". I believe that George Marden's wife, Elizabeth, was Elizabeth Hall daughter of Stephen and Sarah. However her age in the censuses does not tie up except for the 1871 census where her age is exactly right. This guess is partly based on a Sarah Hall, sister-in-law to George Marden, living with him in 1861 - this could be Stephen and Ann's or Elizabeth's daughter Sarah as the age is correct. The name Marden does not appear in the Headley Valuation of 1822 which contradicts Rev. Wallis Hay Laverty comment.
I am his third great grandson.
