In the 1901 census as John Henry Charles Hollands aged 8, born in St Vincent W Margate, Kent, and living with his parents (Henry and Katherine), and two sisters (Dorothy Kathleen and Beatrice Darcy) and a visitor (Mary Ann Tongue aged 70, born in Westminster, London, married and a cook and domestic housekeeper) at 8 Gleneng Cottages, Garlinge, Kent.

Entry in Ancestry British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 for John Hollands a private of South Staffs R 32610 enlisted 4 October 1915 and discharged 7 January 1918 received Victory and British Medals.

Entry in Ancestry British Army WW1 Service Records 1914-1920 for John Henry Charles Hollands of Albertina Cottage, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, aged 23 years 3 months, a gardener dated 13 October 1915 at Margate. He was CofE, height 5ft 7.5 inches, fully expanded chest 37 inches with a range of 2 inches, no distinguishing marks and fit for service in the field at home or abroad. His next of kin was Elsie Hollands of Albertina Cottage, Garlinge, Margate, Kent, married on 25 December 1915 (sic), and had a son John Henry Thomas Hollands born 8 May 1914 at Albertina Cottage, Garlinge, Margate, Kent and daughter Elsie Catherine on 11 January 1916. He was transfered to the 11th Training Reserve Battn on 11 September 1916, and posted 13 March 1917, 16 May 1917 and 9 June 1917. He was at home (i.e. in the UK) from 4 October 1915 to 14 December 1916 (first 4 days were in Dover), with the BEF to 11 March 1917, at home to 8 June 1917. with the BEF to 28 August 1917 and at home to 7 October 1917. He received a shell wound on his head 22 July 1917. He was discharged 7 January 1918 with wounds caused by active service. He received the 1914-15 Star for his service with the South Staffs Reg. on 12 September 1921, British War and Victory Medals on 10 June 1921 and the Kings Certificate on 29 May 1919, a certificate and War Badge 303393 on 17 January 1917. Holland (sic) private 32610 in 9 South Staffs appeared before a medical board on 17 December 1917, was physically unfit for war service and was sent home from hospital to await discharge on 5 January 1918. He received a pension of 27/6 for 4 weeks and 22/- for 48 weeks in respect of a shell which fractured Montral bone and Hernia Cerebri.
