In the 1861 census as James Holsted (sic - in the index, correct on the orginal), aged 8 (sic - in the index, 2 on the original), born in Nackington, Kent and living with his parents (Isaac and Mary A), brother (Henry), sister (Jan), and a visitor (Ann Griggs aged 22, unmarried and sister-in-law in the index but servant on the original) at Nackington, Kent.
His mother died in 1861 and his father married Ann Griggs in 1862. Anna died in 1869 in Hambledon so the family moved there between 1864 and 1869.
In the 1871 census as James Holden aged 12, born in Nackington, Kent, and living with his widowed father (Isaac), and two (half) brothers (John and Wright) at Wye House, Elstead, Surrey.
His father married Eliza Laslett in Hambledon in 1872, and Eliza died died in Farnham in 1877 so the family moved to Churt between 1874 and 1877.
In the 1881 census as James Holden aged 22, born in Nackington, a farmer's son, and living with his widowed father (Isaac), three (half) brothers (Stephen, William and Wright), a cousin (Elizabeth H. Jenpett aged 46, born in Bridge, Kent and employed as a housekeeper) and a servant (Marion Small aged 19, born in Headley and unmarried) at Butts Farm, Churt, Frensham.

In the 1901 census as Jame (sic - in the index, correct on the original) Holden aged 41, born in Oakington (sic - in the index), Kent, widowed, employed as a domestic gardener and living with his daughter (Ririan - sic in the index) at Ridgeway Lane, The Bourne, Farham. (Note that the index is very confused and states he is Stepfather-in-law (Step Father) and living with other families although this is not on the original).
James Holden was the husband of Miriam Deadman, my first cousin three times removed.
