Dr. Helliwell grew up in Thousand Oaks, California graduating from Thousand Oaks High School. He then attended the University of California, San Diego where he earned a B.S. Degree in biochemistry and cell biology. Dr. Helliwell speaks the Spanish language fluently. Enjoying activities such as surfing and hiking, Dr. Helliwell remained at UCSD obtaining his medical degree. Specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Helliwell performed extensive research and internships, as well as publishing several articles in academic journals pertaining to the subject of OB/GYN. Dr. Helliwell has numerous publications in urogyecology and infertility and his interests are in urogynecology, infertility, and cosmetic surgery. In the field of cosmetic surgery he particularly has interest on body contouring and breast enhancement.

Dr. Helliwell’s first two years of residency were at the world renown Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He then decided to obtain valuable experience at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for the remaining years of his residency.

After completing residency, Dr. Helliwell practiced with Kaiser Permanente and obtained his board certification in OB/GYN. Dr. Jason Helliwell is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. His wife, Siniva, is also an OB/GYN doctor here at Advanced Women’s Health Center. Dr. Helliwell always wanted to start his own private practice where he could provide superior care to his patients with this goal in mind, he opened Bakersfield’s Advanced Women’s Health Center.

In Bakersfield, Helliwell and his wife, Dr. Siniva Kaneen, advertise themselves as "cosmetic surgeons," even though their residencies and board certifications are OB-GYN. They're not the only non-plastic surgeons branching into cosmetics. [...]The board's brief letter to Helliwell says be was "negligent in the treatment of a patient" who underwent liposuction and that the treatment "represented simple departures from the standard of care." The letter also said Helliwell was in violation of a state code for disseminating "false or misleading information concerning professional services or products." Because of Medical Board policy, the letter does not say which patient or patients prompted the disciplinary action. [...]Helliwell told The Californian he only agreed to the letter so the board would stop the investigation. Since the reprimand, he said, he has "made every effort to improve things." While Helliwell acknowledged that the patient who contacted the Medical Board "did not have an excellent result," he said consumers often have unrealistic expectations for cosmetic surgery. [...]Helliwell graduated from the University of California, San Diego medical school in 1999 and did his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology. After establishing a practice in Bakersfield, he decided to branch out into cosmetic procedures several years ago. His patient base was female, and the two specialties seemed well-suited for each other.

"I liked cosmetic surgery a lot and realized a lot of people were asking for it," he said. "I had a passion for it."

And, he acknowledged, it's attractive that cosmetic procedures are generally cash-based, a perk for doctors when insurance companies are paying less and less.

Several years ago, Helliwell began attending multi-day classes to learn the procedures. In those classes, which are held throughout the country, a doctor shows a small class how to do cosmetic procedures. A two-day class is considered about 10 hours of training. Helliwell said he has about 300 hours, or about 30 weekend classes -- though he was not specific on the time period during which he obtained them.
