The will from the National Archives reads as follows: The last will and testament by word of mouth of John Gill the Younger of Heathly in the County of Southampton husbandman ? made the eight and twentieth day of September in the year of our Lord God One Thousand Six Hundred Fifty Six in the arpartments of William Chensell? of the above said Heathly yeoman and Thomas Mathew of the above said Heathly husbandman as followeth vizt: Item I give and bequeath to my wife Johane ? two shillings and six pence of lawfull money of England Item I give and bequeath to my wife's child John two shillings and six pence of lawfull money of England Item from all the rest and residue of all and ? my goods and chattels whatso ever ? ? ? and personall I give and bequeath fully and wholy so unto my father John Gill the elder of the above Heathly whom I make and ? my sole executor of this my last will ? ? further my will is that after my father the said John Gill the elder ? the remainder of my goods and chattels left shall remain ? and be unto ? Mathew of the said Heathly, spinster, the daughter of John Mathew of the same Heathly husbandman. Those words as to this ? effort were spoken by the said ? in the presence of the said William Chinell and Thomas Mathews (both of whom made their mark). This will ? was proved at London the fourtenth day of October One Thousand Five Hundred fifty six before the juryes for probate of wills and granting ? lawfully ? by the oath of John Gill the elder ? ? the father and sole executor named in the said will to whom administration of all and singular goods chattels and debts of the said ? was ? he being first sworn truely to administor the same.
The will refer's to his wife's child John, not his son John. However I can find no other reference to Steynt (except for a family living in Bramshot in 1504) and cannot identify an entry for the baptism of this John so I do not know who his father was.
I assume Thomas Mathews was the future husband of John's sister Johane, but it could be that John's wife Joan married Thmas Mathews in October 1656, but this seems very soon after John's death.
John Gill was my third cousin nine times removed.
