Notes

Birth of Ellen Fullick in FreeBMD in April-June 1872 in Farnham (2a 114).

From a copy of the entry of birth for Ellen Fullick on 25 May 1872 in Churt, Frensham, Surrey, father Henry Fullick employed as a farm labourer, mother Martha Fullick formerly Shrubb, informed by Henry Fullick her father (who made his mark so could not write) on 29 June 1872.

In Churt Baptisms Ellen daughter of Henry and Martha Fullick born on 25 May 1872 and christened on 14 July 1872.

In the 1881 census as Ellen Fullock (sic - in the index, Fullick on the original), aged 9, born in Frensham, employed as a farm worker and living with with her parents (Henry and Martha), four brothers (Samuel, James, Frederick and Arthur) and two sisters (Kate and Lilly - this was Lilly Hurst her neice, daughter of Mary Anne), in Churt. The entry is between Simmons Stone and Wellmer's Cottage so I assume this was Coppice Cottage where my father lived later on.

In the 1891 census 1891 census as Ellen Fullick aged 18, born in Frensham, Surrey, single, unemployed, and living with her parents (Henry and Martha), four brothers (Samuel, James, Frederick and Arthur), and two sisters (Kate and Lilly who was her neice) at Simmond Stone, Headley. The previous entry was Simmond Stone, the next entry Frensham Pond Hotel followed by Wishanger so I assume this was Field House which is only a short walk from Coppice Cottage, but the other side of Barford Stream which forms the county and parish boundaries.

She was a witness (together with her future husband James Croucher) at her sister Kate's marriage on 12 December 1896.

Marriage of Ellen Fullick and James Croucher in FreeBMD in April-June 1897 in the Alton District (2c 353). From copy of Entry of Marriage for Ellen Fullick, aged 25, a spinster, and living at Field House, Headley was married to James Croucher on 26 June 1897 at Headley Parish Church by W H Laverty as witnessed by Albert Hutchings and Lillie Hursie Fullick. Her father is given as Henry Fullick, a labourer.

In the 1901 census as Ellen Croucher aged 28, born in Churt, and living with her husband (James), two daughters (Emily and Ellen) and son (William) at The Barracks, Churt, Surrey (Barford Upper Mill).

Lived at Pond Cottage following the death of her father-in-law, but moved to Coppice/Copse Cottage soon afterwards.

In the 1911 census as Ellen Croucher aged 38, and living with James (husband), Ellen, Emily, Ernest, Frederick, James, Ruth and William (children?) in Farnham, Surrey.

The family moved to Moor Side Cottages in Jumps Road, and finally had Fairfield built in the middle 1920s in what is now called Hale House Lane.

Entry in the Register of Deaths for Ellen Croucher in July-September 1943 aged 71 in Surrey Mid E (2a 215).

Entry in Churt Burials for Ellen Croucher of Nethern, Coulsdon on 28 August 1843 aged 71.

Sylvia remembers her as being very servere. She continued living at Fairfield after her husband died, but fell down stairs and was concussed. She then lived with her daughter Ruth Deadman, but suffered from Altzeimers. She died in hospital, and was buried in St Johns, Churt with her husband and daughter "In loving memory of James Croucher died 11th October 1939 aged 78 and his wife Ellen died 25 August 1943 aged 71, also Emily Croucher died 23rd October 1926 aged 29".

Shirly Dave has an entry in Ancestry Public Member Trees for Ellen Fullick born 25 May 1872 in Churt, Surrey, parents Henry Fullick and Martha Shrubb, her marriage to James Croucher on 26 June 1897 at All Saints, Headley, Hampshire, her seven children and her death on 24 August 1943 at Churt. Matthew Savill has similar information adding her christening on 14 July 1872 at St John the Evangelist, Churt, and burial on 28 August 1943.

From Phillip Brooks: Churt: A Medieval Village - Coppice Cottage is probably on the site of the first assart in the early 13th century and enclosed by the de Hales. The area was known as Lower Hale Head. The cottage suggests a date of 1660. The stones from the old floors are now used as garden paths. The track on the south side (now a path) was formally a public road to Field House and Wishanger.
