In the 1871 census as Frederick G Croucher aged 4, born in Cuckfield, Sussex, and living with his widowed mother (Hannah), and three brothers (Albert, Harry and Thomas W) and sister (Annie M) at 2 Norfolk Cottages, Balcombe, Sussex.
His mother married John Freeman in 1878.
In the 1881 census as Frederick Croucher aged 14, born in Balcombe, Sussex, and a farm servant living with Amos Longhurst (aged 66, born in Slaugham, Sussex, and a farmer of 220 acres employing 3 men and 1 boy), his wife (Mary Ann aged 67 and born in Clayton, Sussex), son (Amos aged 30, born in Slaugham, Sussex, single and a farmer's son), neice (Ada Gander aged 15 and born in Stratford, Essex), and a servant (Emily Gasson aged 18, born in Balcombe, Sussex and single) at Pilsty Farm, Cuckfield, Sussex.
I cannot find him in the 1891 census but he was not living with his mother.
In the 1901 census as Frederich G Crucher (sic - in the index, Croucher on the original) aged 33, born in Cuckfield, Sussex, single, a platelayer on railway, and living with his (step)father (John Freeman), mother (Hannah Freeman), cousin (Kate Smith - future wife), boarder (Ernest Cheeseman aged 22, born in Gumshall, Sussex, single and a platelayer on railway, and Alford Hay Haylora aged 26, born in Balcombe, Sussex, single and a carter on farm) at Norfolk Cottages, Balcombe, Sussex.

Entry in Ancestry British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 (much illegible) for Frederick George Croucher aged 19, born in Cuckfield and number ??673 in the West Riding Regiment. He was aged 19, a labourer, height 5 ft 7.5 inches, weight 127 lbs, chest 35.75, dark complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, and fit for service on 25 November 1885 in 3rd Batt Royal Sussex Regiment. His step father was John Freeman of 32 Norfolk Cottages, Balcombe, Sussex. He was in the West Indies between 5 October 1886 and 22 September 1888. He gained a 4th class certificate of education on 4 January 1887. He was discharged on 26 November 1897 on termination of first period of limited engagement. There is also an entry for Fred George Croucher of 5 Flat 94 Creek Road, Deptford aged 48 years 11 months who had served in the Duke of Wellington West Riding and attested on 29 September 1915 at Blackheath for 1 years service in 10 County of London Regiment. There is also an entry for Frederick George Croucher of 5 Flat 94 Creek Road, Deptford, SE aged 50 years 4 months, a platelayer who had been in the Duke of Wellington West Rid Y for 12 years RDC 119 Cvy and attested on 21 September 1915 in the Royal Engineers as a proficient sapper on 9 February 1917. There is a Trade Qualification Certificate from 261st Railway Company RE dated 12 December 1917 for a very superior rate of engineer pay for WR265653. There is a statement of disability dated 25 January 1919 for Frederick George Croucher WR178623 of Flat 1 94 Creek Road, Deptford aged 52 who joined on 24 September 1915 at Blackheath. An entry for Pte Croucher 3402 gives his next of kin as Mrs Kate Croucher 5 Flat 94 Creek Road Deptford, maiden name Smith married on 18 January 1902 at St Augustine, Croydon, and his children as Hannah Louise born 21 June 1907 at Balcombe christened on 19 July 1907 at Balcombe Church, Sussex, William John born on 7 October 1903 in Balcombe, christened on 6 November 1903 at Balcombe Church, Sussex, Frederick George born on 10 February 1906 at Balcombe, christened on 17 March 1906 in Balcombe Church, Sussex, Annie Maria born on 23 June 1910 at Haywards Heath, christened on 17 July 1910 at Haywards Heath. Winifred Jane born on 24 January 1913 in Greenwich, christened on 17 March 1913 at Deptford, ? Douglas born on 16 October 1916 in Greenwich and not yet baptised. Another entry gives similar information but gives the birth of Hannah Louise as 21 June 1912 and christened on 28 July 1912 which must be incorrect, gives the birth place of Winifred Jane and Albert Douglas as Broad Street, and the christening of the latter on 6 March 1913. In his medical history dated 29 September 1915 he was born in Cuckfield, Sussex, aged 49, employed as a gas stoker, was 5 ft 9 inches, chest 41 inches.
