In the 1881 census as Robert Henry Friday aged 5, born in Barnet and living with his parents (Ernest (sic - in the index, Robert on the original) H and Mary Ann), two brothers (Bertie William and Walter John), aunt (Elizabeth Gay), and two servants (Samuel Wright aged 23, born in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, and James Caleb Hollands aged 21 and born in Northfleet, Kent, both unmarried and employed as butcher's assistants) at the High Street, Chipping Barnet, Hertfordshire.
In the 1891 census as Robert H Friday aged 16, born in High Barnett, Hertfordshire, and a schoolboy boarding at Grays College Endowed School, headmaster John M Rigg (aged 61 and born in Kendel, Westmoreland), his wife (Elizabeth aged 64 and born in Scotland), two other school masters, four servants, and some 21 other boys at Grays Thurruck, Essex. The Lewis Topographical Dictionary of England, 1831 states this was "a free school, situated in the churchyard, founded and endowed by William Palmer, in 1706, in which ten children are instructed, and four are clothed". British History states in an extract from A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848) that it was "a free school situated in the churchyard, and now united with a national school, founded and endowed by William Palmer, in 1706"
His mother died in 1891 and his father married her sister Elizabeth in 1892.
