In the 1881 census as Alfred Dutton aged 4, born in London, (Middlesex in the index but not on the original), an engineer's son crossed out on the original, and living with his uncle and aunt (James Doderman (more like Dodgeman on the original), aged 59, born in Chatham, Kent and employed as a master mariner and Chatham, Kent, and Charlotte aged 52 and born in Rochester), their son (James William aged 14 and born in Jarrow, Durham), and their two nieces (Agnes Smith aged 21 and Fanny Smith aged 16, both born in Rochester ) at 2 Private (Glanville Road on the original next to the Grocers Shop), Strood, Kent.
In the 1891 census as Alfred Dutton aged 14, born in Stepney, London, employed as a blacksmith, and living with his parents (Tom and Ellen), and two brothers ( Edgar and Henry) and sister (Elleanor) at 27 Millow Street, Westoe, Durham (south of South Shields).
