Hi Jon
Great to hear from you, We appear to be 4th Cousins. Our common ancestors are Henry Larbey and Maria Chandler. I have a lot of info' on Larbey's but most of it has come from David Larbey in New Zealand. David sent me a GEDCOM and I'll gladly send it on to you with the bits that I've added (If you prefer I'll send it in RTF format). I think most of the sources are valid but I haven't yet confirmed all of them.
My GM (Jemima Larbey) was the daughter of William Larbey and Sarah Luff - they lived in Epsom. I have William born in Shottermill which I think is near Fernhurst?
email me if you want exchange info'
Regards
Jeff (Jeff.deveaux@blueyonder.co.uk)
PS, I'm in Rotherham, S. Yorks.

Hi Bob, My GM was Jemima, dau of William Larbey & Sarah Luff. They lived in Epsom but came from around the Greyswood/Hazelmere area (I think). Bill was the son of Henry who was the son of Thomas. I haven't done much research on Larbey's but do have a GEDCOM that David Larbey of NZ sent me (our families have Thomas as our common ancester).
I have a few other contacts - in the UK that cousins of my Dad. I can send you the GEDCOM or an RTF printout if you want.
The info' I have (from David)also indicates that the Larbey's were originally French:-
The Larby (ey) (ie) family in England go back to the beginning of the 16th century (possibly back to 1490) when they emigrated from France (probably Normandy). They were one of a number of skilled iron workers brought to England to run the iron smelting and forging in the Sussex Weald, later they were involved with gunfoundry, forging of cannons. (see Gunfounding in Weald in the 16th century...Royal Amouries publication). Morys Larbie (occ. Fyner...refiner?) is one of a number mentioned in the Subsidy & Denization rolls (for the purpose of taxation) of the 16th century. the first Larbey (y) to appear in the Lynchmere Parish register is Nicolas Larbey (y) ca. 1657.
Let me know if want any more info'
Jeff
