Notes

I cannot find an entry in FreeBMD between 1843 and 1847, but her first name may be Susan or Susannah, and her last name Cox, Cock or Cocks.

In the 1851 census as Susan Cock (sic - spelt on the original) aged 6, born in North Lopham, and living with her parents (Edward and Esther Cock), three brothers (George, Henry and Thomas) and a sister (Sophia) at Great Common, North Lopham, Norfolk.

In the 1861 census as Susan Cock (sic - spelt on the original) aged 17, born in North Lopham, unmarried, employed as a housemaid and living with Samuel Beales (aged 34, born in North Lopham and employed as a butcher and innkeper), his wife Lousia (aged 32 and born in North Lopham), their three sons (Arthur aged 10, Fredrick aged 2 and Herbert aged 7), and two lodgers (James Brock aged 50, unmarried and employed as an agricultural labourer and Morris Jolly aged 40, unmarried and employed as a linen weaver) in the village of North Lopham.

I have crossed-checked the censuses, and I can find no entry for this Susan Cock after 1861 and I can find no entry for Susannah Cox before her marriage. Her parents spelt their name Cock on the registration of marriage, but Cox after 1871, and the spelling Cox was used for the registration of some of their children. She must have moved to Derbyshire between 1861 and 1867, but it is not clear where she met William Belton.

Marriage of William Belton and Susannah Cox in FreeBMD in October-December 1867 in Chesterfield (7b 967). On a copy of Entry of Marriage 118 in 1867 in Brimington, Derby, Susannah Cox married William Belton on 13 November 1867 at the Parish Church of Brimington by banns. She was of full age, a spinster of the parish, and her father was Edward Cox, a labourer. She made her mark. It was witnessed by William Hawkin and Mary Gaymer, the latter making her mark.

In the 1871 census as Susanna Belton aged 26, born in North Apham (sic), Norfolk, and living with her husband (William), and son (Benjamin E) at Brockwell Road, Brimington Derbyshire.

In the 1881 census as Susannah Belton aged 36, born in North Copham (it says Derbyshire in the index but there is no county on the original), employed as a dressmaker, and living with her husband (William), son (Benjamin) and three daughters (Everemly (sic), Frory (sic), and Minnie) at High Street Brimington, Derbyshire.

In the 1891 census as Susannah Belton aged 46, born in North Lopham, Norfolk, and living with her husband (William), two sons (Benjamin and William) and four daughters (Eva, Flory, Lilly and Wilda (sic) M) at New Brimington, Chesterfield, Derby.

In the 1901 census as Susannah Belton aged 56, born in Lopham, Norfolk, employed as a dressmaker working at home on her own account, and living with her husband (William), two sons (Benjamin and William) and daughter (Lily) at Queen Street, New Brimington, Derbyshire.

In the 1911 census as Susannah Belton aged 66, and living with William (husband?), Benjamin (son?), Hilda May and Lily (daughters?) in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Death of Susannah Belton in FreeBMD in January-March 1912 aged 67 in Chesterfield (7b 925).
