Birth of William Charles Corps in FreeBMD in January-March 1891 in Steyning (2b 284) which included Hove.

In the 1891 census as William C Corpe (sic - in the index, Corps on the original) aged 2 months, born in Hove, and living with his parents (Edward C and Susan), brother (Horace E) and two sisters (Ellen B and Emma C) at 16 Belfast Road, Hove, Sussex.

In the 1901 census as William C Corpo (sic - in the index, Corps on the original) aged 10, born in Hove, and living with his parents (Edward E and Susan) and a boarder (Robert Deadman aged 21, born in Worthing, single and a carpenter) and a visitor (John Williams aged 42, born in Ballingham, Herefordshire, married and an architectural sculptor) in 16 Belfast Street, Hove, Sussex.

He had a daughter born in Steyning in 1915. His wife had two further daughters after his death, fathers unknown, but given the surname Corps.

Entry in Commonwealth War Graves Commission for William Charles Corps, a sergeant in the Royal Garrison Artillery 211th Siege Bty., service number 146519, aged 27, Son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Corps, of 24, Rutland Rd., Hove; husband of Winifred E. Corps, of 31, Landseer Rd., Hove, Sussex on 30 April 1918 and buried at LXVII. A. 12. Etaples Military Cemetery, France. Etaples is a town about 27 kilometres south of Boulogne. The Military Cemetery is to the north of the town, on the west side of the road to Boulogne. There were four Red Cross Hospitals here and wounded were brought here from elsewhere.

There is also an entry in the Sussex Roll of Honour for Hove: Corps, William Charles Sergeant 146518 211th Siege Batter The Royal Garrison Artillery Died of wounds in base hospital at Etaples 30 April 1918. Aged 27. Son of Mr & Mrs E. C. Corps of 24, Rutland Road, Hove. Husband of Mrs Winifred Corps of 31, Landseer Road, Hove. Born in Brighton and enlisted in Hove. Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.

Relationship

William Charles Corps was the grandson of William Corps, husband of Tryphena Chambers Horsley, wife of Thomas Luff, my half first cousin twice removed.
