Entry in West Surrey Family History Society Frensham Baptisms for the christening of Charles Croucher on 25 December 1790, son of John of Churt.
Entry in the IGI for the marriage of Charles Croucher and Harriot Dudman on 29 April 1814 in Frensham, Surrey. This entry is also in the West Surrey Family History Society West Surrey Marriages adding both were of this parish and it was by banns.
His employment is stated to be a potter on the West Surrey Family History Society Frensham Baptisms for Eliza (1819), William (1822), Charles (1824), and Elizabeth (1830).
Harriet buried in 1830 on the same day as Elizabeth was christened.
Entry in the IGI for the marriage of Charles Croucher and Charlotte Shrub on 25 June 1832 in Frensham, Surrey. This entry is also in the West Surrey Family History Society West Surrey Marriages but his name is spelt Crowcher. He was of this parish while Charlotte was from Headley, Hampshire, and it was by banns. The Bishops Transcripts (No. 204) has the marriage of Charles Croucher (widower) and Charlotte Shrub (spinster of Headley) married by banns by John Rogers on 25 June 1832, witnessed by Charles Dutton, Ann Vivery? and Harriett Croucher. Charles Croucher made his mark.
In the 1841 census as Charles Croucher aged 45 (rounded down to a multiple of 5), born in Surrey, employed as a potter, and living with Charlotte (wife?), Charles, Charlotte, Elizabeth, John, Mary and Stephen (children?) in Lower Churt, Surrey. His daughter Ann Luff and her family were living at the same address.
Death in West Surrey Family History Society West Surrey Burials in 1843 aged 52 at Frensham. There are two possible entries for death in FreeBMD in Farnham district - October-December 1843 (4-114) or January-March 1844 (4-111). The name is spelt Charlee on the typed original of the first entry. I suspect both are for the same person. On a copy made on 1 November 2005 of the Entry of Death number 4 in 1844 in Farnham Charles Croucher died on 22 December 1843 at Churt. He was 52 years old, employed as a potter, and died of Apolexy (12 hours). This death was registered by Charles Woods, the Godalming Coroner on 1 January 1844. I assume the other entry was registered by his family prior to the end of 1843.
His wife was a widow in the 1851 census.
My father's records state he was a potter and smallholder, but no doubt his biggest income came from trade with smugglers. He went down to the south coast for brandy. In later life he lived at Squirrels, Hale House, Churt where they had a small shop (I doubt if this is correct as in 1841 he was in Lower Churt and I assume his second wife moved to the shop at Squirrels after his death).
My father's records from Frensham Parish Registry does not give birth, but gives marriage years. He states 7 children from first marriage - Eliza and Elizabeth are not in the IGI, but only lists three children with Charlotte - John, Stephen and Clara.
Charles Croucher was my second great grandfather.
