The King has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallentry and devotion to duty in the execution of air operations:-
Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross
Flying Officer Reginald Clifford Andrew Cowles (156599) R.A.F.V.R. No. 10 Squardron. Flying Officer Cowles is a navigator of high merit who has participated in many successful sorties against some of the most heavily defended targets in Germany. He has never failed to guide his aircraft straight to the target and safely back. In October, 1943, this officer was the navigator of an aircraft that was so severely damaged by fire from the defences that the captain was forced to make a crash landing on the return to base. On another occasion, during a mine laying operation, his aircraft was engaged by two anti-aircraft ships and the trailing aerial shot away. It is largely owing to Flying Officer Cowles great ability that his captain has been able to obtain such excellent photographs.
Flg. Off. Cowles's home is at Walthamstow where he was born in 1921. He was educated at St George Gascoinge Central School, Walthamstow. He enlisted for air crew in 1941, trained in Canada and USA and was commissioned in 1943 so is entitled to wear the ribbon of the 1939/43 Star.
