There is a submitted entry in the IGI for the christening of James Couls on 4 March 1676 in Kirby Cane, Norfolk, parents Roger and Ann Couls. There is an entry in the Pedigree Resource File with the same information except the suname is spelt Cowles.
Angus Palmer has seen this entry on film and confirmed it by email stating it is spelt Coulds. He also states that the Coulds spelling was used up to Martha ("In every case the parents are given as Roger Could(s) and Ann. The writing is absolutely clear except that every time there is a little squiggle after the "d" and its hard to tell if that is meant to be an "s" or is simply a flourish.") and then changed to Cowles.
Kirby Cane is some 12 miles SSE of Norwich.
James Cowles was my fourth great granduncle.
